growing up as a poor and amputee lady in the disability community
Join me as I share my personal journey of growing up poor and physically challenged, and I’ll challenge myself to reflect on the biggest lessons I've learned along the way!
Growing up poor and physically challenged is a unique experience that has shaped me into the person I am today. It's a story that I'm not always comfortable sharing, but I believe that it's an important one to tell.
As a kid, I always felt like I was at a disadvantage. While my friends were worrying about what game to play at recess, I was worried about how I was going to get my homework done with a disability that made it difficult for me to write. And on top of that, I was from a low-income household, so we struggled to make ends meet. My parents worked multiple jobs just to put food on the table, and I often had to fend for myself from a very young age.
The financial struggles were real, and they affected every aspect of my life. I remember having to wear hand-me-down clothes to school, and feeling embarrassed when my friends would ask me why I never had the latest toys or gadgets. It was hard to explain to them that my parents simply couldn't afford those things. And as for my physical limitations, it was tough to participate in sports or other activities that my friends took for granted. I had to find alternative ways to stay active and engaged, which wasn't always easy.
Despite the challenges, my parents did their best to provide for me and encourage me to pursue my passions. They taught me that I was capable of overcoming anything as long as I put my mind to it. And I think that's one of the most important lessons I learned growing up poor and physically challenged - the importance of perseverance and resilience.
I have so many vivid memories of what it was like to grow up in this situation. Like the time I was chased from school for non payment of school fee. Or the time I had to stay home from school because I didn't have the right equipment to participate in a project. Also the time I was denied prefect in two different schools due to my disability (I did junior secondary school in a different school and senior secondary school in a different school too). Those experiences were tough, but they helped shape my perspective on life and taught me to appreciate the little things.
One experience that really stands out to me is when I was in the hospital for a surgery related to my disability. I was so scared and feeling so alone, but my parents were by my side the entire time, holding my hand and telling me that everything was going to be okay. In that moment, I realized just how much they loved me, and how much they had sacrificed for me. It was a turning point for me, because it made me realize that I wasn't alone, and that I had people who cared about me deeply.
Looking back, I realize that my experiences have taught me so much about resilience and perseverance. I've learned that no matter what life throws at you, you can always find a way to overcome it. And that's what I want to pass on to you guys - the idea that no matter what challenges you're facing, you have the power to overcome them.
In the end, growing up poor and physically challenged has been a tough journey, but it's one that has made me who I am today. I'm grateful for the lessons I've learned, and I hope that by sharing my story, I can inspire others to share their own.
